Good classes, good teachers, terrible GLS staff that only want your money.

The Good & the Bad - what did you like best? What least?

I thought that this was an decent program overall. I took A1 (complete beginner) for 2 weeks.

The teachers were good. The morning classes were a bit slow, but I found quite successful. One of the teachers was especially good at completely immersing the students in the language right from day one. I liked that you get different teachers with different teaching styles. I took the intensive class for the first week and found it to be a complete waste of money. We were handed photocopies of vocabulary sheets and spent the entire class memorizing them.

The shared flat that I was originally in was over 100 years old. Very beautiful in a nostalgic kind of way but many things were not operational (shower, internet). When I complained to GLS they were completely unapologetic and completely rude.

I found it surprising how little follow up that they do to make sure students are settled comfortably in complete strangers homes. When I transferred to the Brandenburg Gate student apartment they charged me for both the Apartment and the shared flat because they would be able to find a student to replace me on short notice.

As I was packing to leave the shared flat the woman that owned informed that her new student would be arriving that afternoon. The Brandenburg apartment was in a great location (for tourist activities it's a 20 minute train ride to the school) with decent accommodations. It was extremely overpriced though. I was incredibly disatisfied by the GLS staff and felt like they had taken advantage of my situation.

Your recommendations for other students

If you don't mind a slow pace for classes you will learn a lot, eventually. The books were a week late. The teachers were great. The GLS staff was rude, apathetic and slimy. The apartments were mediocre and overpriced. My advice, get your own accommodations and don't bother with intensive classes.

  • 27.09.2013 Alyssa, we are sorry to hear that your experience was not as good as it could have been. As far as nostalgic flats are concerned - many Berliners live like that, Berlin has hardly ever been as rich or chic as Hamburg or Munich. We had a look at the invoice again, we did not charge you twice and we arranged a change of accommodation in spite of our terms and conditions. So we did try to meet you halfway, albeit unsuccessfully. But we will sort this out and contact you in a personal mail.;
