Berlin - Schulfarm Insel Scharfenberg

The Island is within the city limits of Berlin, a bit northwest of the the city center. The School farm has its own horses, so you can do horseback riding, canoeing and sailing are possible, too. As this school is a public school, it is significantly less pricey than the other boarding schools in Berlin, which are private schools.

But the entry requirements at this public school are demanding - good German on level B2 and a minimum age of 16. If your German is lower than level B2, you can do a foundation course first and then switch to this school.

The School

... was founded in 1922, on the grounds of a beautiful farm with horse stables and botanic garden. All school facilities are on the island - classrooms, foto laboratory, cafeteria, sailing station, boarding houses for boys and girls. The whole island belongs to the school, it is not only a very safe, but also a very beautiful environment - with lots of opportunities for swimming, sailing and canoeing. It takes about 50 minutes to get to the city center of Berlin: ferry first, then bus or metro.

Subjects:

Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, IT, History, Geography, Music, Art, German Literature, English, French, Spanish

Extracurricular activities: horseback riding, sailing, chess, beekeeping

Accommodation:

There are separate boarding houses for boys and girls on the island, each house with a big kitchen and a dining area for students to meet. International students stay in shared double rooms with ensuite bathroom (photo gallery).

Accommodation in host families is possible, too. A popular option is to stay at school during the week, and to stay with a host family on weekends and in holidays. Host families live off the island, mostly in the Berlin district of Tegel. To get to the island is easy: there is a ferry going back and forth all day between the island and the rest of Berlin.
